At Work

Alongside my practice as a Speech and Language Therapist, I have also trained in various other modalities over the years.

I have a counselling qualification and am also a qualified holistic therapist, having trained in massage, aromatherapy and reflexology several years ago. I have studied and attained competence to practice various energy psychology techniques including Reiki and EFT (Emotional Freedom Technique).

As my clinical interest shifted from working with very young children to adolescents and adults, I studied attachment theory and sensory integration theory. I believe that having a robust understanding of the foundations of human development are essential when working with clients who experience developmental communication issues, including developmental language disorder.

I particularly enjoy the psychological aspect of stammer therapy and have found that using ACT (Acceptance and Commitment Therapy) principles with stammer clients to be very effective alongside other approaches. I am currently training with SIRPA (Stress Illness Recovery Practitioner’s Association) and looking forward to using this modality with stammer clients in due course.

I am unapologetically passionate about wellbeing at work, an essential part of which is professional supervision. In my last substantive post as Clinical Lead for a team of Speech and Language Therapists in private practice, I led the complete restructure of the service away from a  ‘client first’ focus and towards a ‘therapist wellbeing first’ model, ensuring a much better experience for both employees and service users.

Outside Work

I have three great kids, a wonderful grandson and five grand dogs, all of whom I enjoy spending time with when I’m not working.

My son lives in Dubai which is where this phot0 was taken and I pop over to UAE regularly to visit him and the sun, particularly in winter! I also have family in Australia and get out there as often as I can. Australia is a beautiful country and I’ve not seen very much of it – yet.

I’m definitely happiest outdoors and can usually be found in the garden, on our allotment or wandering in the woods.

Favourite indoor pursuits will always include food. I’m a pretty good cook and even my non-vegan friends and family enjoy dinner at mine.  When not cooking or eating I really love crafting. I’ve mastered knitting and crochet and now exploring painting and pottery. I’d love to have a go at felting too.

I am endlessly curious about (probably) far too many things. Having engaged in self study of astrology for several years, I intend to embark on more formal instruction in 2024, in between work, cooking, crafting, gardening and socialising…….
